The pencil FAQ - coloured pencils

All pigments - even natural ones - contain traces of heavy metals.
The quantity and level of concentration in which they ocur in the human organism determins their effect on health.

STAEDTLER products have a heavy-metal content that is below the permissible limit value.

Coloured leads consist of colour pigments, natural filling materials such as talcum and kaolin, cellulose-based binding agents and waxes.

Are coloured leads toxic?

From medical as well as chemical points of view classifications such as toxic or non-toxic are considered inaccurate and negligent and are therefore not admissible according to fair tradings legislation in many countries.

Are wax crayons toxic?

The same that can be said of coloured leads holds true for wax crayons. They comply with the requirements laid down in the European safety standard DIN EN 71 and do not contain any cadmium or lead pigments.

Are pencils labelled with the CE-symbol better than others?

This question cannot be answered with a straight yes or no.

Used properly, STAEDTLER products will not cause any health hazards to the consumer.

All products marked with the CE-label meet the specifications laid down in the European Standard DIN EN 71 regulating the safety of toys.
